Hampstead: London different from London
the neighborhood that has decided not to change over time
Service Description
There are neighborhoods in London that feel like cities within a city. Hampstead is one of them, but with a difference: it doesn't even feel like London. It feels like an eighteenth-century village that has found itself, against its will, surrounded by a metropolis. It just chose to ignore it. You exit the tube and the pace immediately changes: the High Street is full of cafes, independent shops, and small passageways that open onto hidden courtyards. There's a crepe vendor on the sidewalk and a coffee shop housed in an old red telephone booth. No one's in a hurry, or at least they pretend not to. But it's when you leave the main road that Hampstead shows its true colors. Holly Bush doesn't have an easy address. It's at the top of a stone staircase that most tourists overlook. You climb toward Holly Bush and Fenton House, a seventeenth-century merchant's house with a walled garden and red roses on the walls. Around it are small villas with names like Admiral's House and Grove Lodge. From there, we descend toward Kenwood House, passing the Spaniards Inn, a 16th-century pub that served drinks to Dickens, Keats, and many others who have never left their names. We return to the village via Flask Walk, a short pedestrian street lined with tables, flowers, and antiques. Hampstead isn't a place you visit like a historic center. You get lost, you experience it first, and the little gems it hides can only be found if you know where to look. - - Walking only. No transportation, no entrance fee included.
